Joel Choi – Artist Statement: Faith, Fun, Flair

Faith, Fun, Flair

I let the music envelop me and take me along for its wondrous journey. Some might say music is restrictive and when the dance is based on the song it limits the timing and style of movements I can perform. But in my adventure, the rhythm I feel, the melody I hear goes beyond what the musician mixed into the audio file and transforms into a pocket dimension where I can investigate what kind of motions feel the best for me. I often get discouraged when I suddenly run into a large wall that seems to block my view of the rest of this world, but then I remember I dance for a higher purpose. When I re-center myself on why I dance: to glorify my God, to have fun with everyone around me, and to reach greater heights of virtuosity in my performance, I am suddenly able to find the thin outline of a door hidden among the bricks that I haven’t noticed before. I go through this process every time I want to go just a bit deeper than a 30-second choreography I make for fun, but when I come back from this other universe, I come back a little more mature and a little more excited. I will always do my best to make my journey an interesting one for my audience to watch, but whether they cheer me on or leave me as I stumble through an alien terrain, they can be rest assured that the performance is honest.
