This is Who I am

This is who I am

A One Minute solo – exactly. No more, no less.

No music.

This is a dance of your favorite movement.  Not your favorite “moves”, but movement that feels “delicious” to you – fun to do, feels good on your body. BUT!  You will also add:

  • At least two movements that you feel are “ugly” or “awkward”.
  • At least two moments that play with balance and off balance.
  • At least two movements that are difficult (virtuosic) for you to perform successfully.

Have a clear beginning, clear execution of ideas, clear ending. Do not improvise, compose. Even though you may improvise to develop this composition, the result will be a composed study that can be repeated.

POST BELOW: Include TITLE/YOUR NAME, VIDEO, COMMENT.

Nai’ya: This is Who I Am

In this piece I challenge my body’s ability to be stable by making movements that put me off balance and poses that are awkward or disorienting.

Mira Berkson: This Is Who I Am

Esther Hwang: This Is Who I Am

In my choreography I find movement that is delicious to me and take on the challenge of activating energies of balance and gravity. I hope I added compelling intention to the moments directly after pressing “Record”!

Emily: This Is Who I Am

In this piece, I explored the space between who I was and who I am now: starting at the barre and ending in our circle with all of you.

CHAR JONES: This Is Who I Am

This is Me! Charlotte!

I had such a fun time creating this piece and playing with different challenges involving balancing on one foot, balancing on my hands, doing “awkward” movements such as creating a couple odd shapes with my body that seem animalistic, and some difficult moves for me such as a cartwheel on the left side and a double stag high jump. Enjoy!!

Joel: This Is Who I Am

This was an interesting experiment because I’m always trying to AVOID awkward movements but embracing them and going along with them was a new experience. Loved everyone’s contribution!

Noah: This Is Who I Am

I really liked working on this piece because I found it challenging to try a virtuosic movement as well as do moves that felt awkward.  I got my ideas for my awkward movements at the end of the performance from the movements of windup toys.

Obuchi: This Is Who I Am

This choreography explores movements and poses that feel good and awkward to me.

Zoë: This Is Who I Am

I tried to use only movement that I already knew for my more “virtuosic” and “awkward” movement, which was an interesting decision since it made me do movement that was “supposed” to be a certain way. I thought that filming in my room would give a more accurate “this is me” impression. I’m not sure I succeeded, but I think the roughness of the video might be somewhat representative of me.
