Time, Tempo…

Time, Tempo, Meter, Rhythm, Breath

Create a delicious movement phrase (or use your first solo) of about 30-40 seconds in length. Create it as “flat” as possible so that you can manipulate the phrase with tempo, meter, rhythm and breath. You will create four variations on this phrase. Variation #1: Use Tempo Variations (see chart in Pweb under Assignments tab “Tempo Variations”). Variation #2: Use Meter Variations. Do part of the phrase in duple, part in triple, and part in an irregular meter such as 5, 7, or 11.  Variation #3: Create and record a clapping rhythm, record it to last 60 seconds in length.  This rhythm may stay the same or vary throughout.  Dance your delicious movement phrase to this rhythm. Variation #4: dance your delicious movement phrase to breath.

Noah- Tempo

For this study, I have chosen to include a flat version instead of my clapping version because I found it much more difficult to create. I want it to serve as a baseline for comparison to the other videos.

The second video I chose to include was my meter exercise. I started off in 4/4 and transitioned to 3/4 at the end.

The third video I chose was a tempo variation in which I messed around with speed.

The final video is a breath version. I found this exercise to be very relaxing.

Joel: Tempo

*Excuse my bad hair while recording this*

This was my flat movement with as little emphasis or “decorations” as possible.

This video shows my dance in changing meters: 2-counts, 3-counts, then 5-counts

This video shows my choreography led by breath.

Finally, this video shows my choreography performed to a clapping rhythm I recorded on my laptop. It was interesting to see how a choreography meant for 30-40 seconds was extended to a minute by the rhythm I followed.

Zoë—Time, etc.

First I performed my flat phrase, then I messed with tempo, then meter (3, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 3, 3, 7, 3, 3), then rhythm (variations on a basic clapping phrase), and then I danced it to breath.

Esther // Tempo

The first bit of this video is my original movement. I then experiment with tempo changes, meter changes, dancing to a clapping rhythm, and dancing with the breath as the main focus.

Above is my movement phrase preformed flat.

Above I played with changing the meter throughout my phrase.

Above I did not do a movement unless it matched with a breath in or out. When I stopped moving, then I held my breath.

Above I experiment and danced to a clapping rhythm.
